The Schwarzes Rössl is situated in the very centre of St. Wolfgang im Salzkammergut, Upper Austria, the charming little town nestled in the Alps, at the foot of the famous mountain Schafberg.

About 200 metres from our hotel you will find the beautiful Wolfgangsee Lake – one of the most beautiful and best known lakes of the region. Its northern shore is surrounded by mountain Schafberg, which is 1783 metres high. In the summer a rack railway, opened back in 1893, runs from the St. Wolfgang to the summit. The peak offers a panoramic view of the Salzkammergut mountains and lakes.

The fascinating history of St. Wolfgang dates back to 976 when Saint Wolfgang erected the first church right here, at the shore of Wolfgangsee. In the medieval times the town was almost as famous destination for pilgrimages as Rome or Aachen. Later on, in 18th and 19th century, reputable painters of their time used to visit St. Wolfgang and work in this charming little town situated near the residence of the Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria in Bad Ischl. Nowadays, St. Wolfgang is one of the most popular Austrian resorts both in summer and during the winter, thanks to the variety of attractions and activities tourists may easily find for themselves in this area.

Skiing, mountain climbing, destination spa, stunning views, fresh air, peace and quiet smoothly combined with tourist attractions, monuments that for centuries have been overlooking the area – it all makes St Wolfgang a perfect place to spend your holidays or just to stop for a few days and follow the traces of the famous visitors who used to stay here in the past.
